Wang Lei’s father is a general surgeon. With the original intention of curing diseases and saving lives, he followed his father’s footsteps and also applied to the Department of Clinical Medicine at Zhengzhou University. Although he was transferred to the oral medicine major, he never gave up on his dream of becoming a surgeon.

In 1995, Wang Lei went south from his hometown of Henan to Guangzhou and studied general surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University. In 1996, he was admitted to the then Sun Yat-sen Medical University and became a student of Wang Jianping, the first dean of Zhongshan Sixth Hospital and former executive vice president of Sun Yat-sen University. After graduation, he stayed at the school to work in the Department of Gastroenterology and Intestinal Surgery of Zhongshan First Hospital. He passed the in-service doctoral exam in 2000.
