In 1995, Wang Lei went south from his hometown of Henan to Guangzhou and studied general surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University. In 1996, he was admitted to the then Sun Yat-sen Medical University and became a student of Wang Jianping, the first dean of Zhongshan Sixth Hospital and former executive vice president of Sun Yat-sen University.
